Oceana Magazine - Super Role Model
One of the unexpected responsibilities that goes along with being a model or public figure is that your actions can and will affect lots of younger people who may look up to you. It’s something I’ve tried to take seriously over the years because I feel there is a severe lack of good role models in the media for young people to emulate.
The above editorial and interview go along with the Oceana covers I posted earlier this week. The magazine’s primary focus is on the juxtaposition of fashion, charity and leadership, so I was happy to talk a lot about my favorite charities and why I support them. Senhoa is a group in Cambodia that rescues little girls from human trafficking and gives them a home, an education and a job. I designed a special jewelry line for Senhoa and asked my friends Behati Prinsloo, Caroline Trentini and Iman to model it and my fellow The Face castmate Nigel Barker to photograph it.
LakayPam is a group in Haiti that supports and nurtures hundreds of orphans, many of whom were affected by the earthquake. In addition to fundraising events, my husband James, Behati and I traveled down to Haiti to create a documentary (click HERE to watch) and raise awareness for the ongoing difficulties in that country.
The Model Alliance is a New York-based group which is fighting for fair and safe working standards for younger models. Though we are a new group, we have already seen lots of industry support and incremental change for the better.

Oceana Magazine - 2012
Covers 1 & 2
Oceana is the first national, charity-based periodical that celebrates the marriage of high-end Canadian fashion, art, photography and leadership. When they asked me to be their 2012 cover girl and told me all profits from the magazine go to Sick Kids Hospital, I jumped at the opportunity. Stay tuned for the editorial and interview where I discuss some of the charities close to my heart.
Both cover photos by Chris Nicholls. Which one is your favorite?
Yorkdale Expansion Campaign - Behind the scenes
With more than 225 shops and services, Yorkdale Shopping Centre is already Canada’s premier shopping destination. To coincide with their brand new $220-million, 145,000-square-foot expansion, Yorkdale invited me to star in a special multi-platform campaign celebrating many of the iconic brands arriving at the mall. As a Canadian I’m very happy to be a part of such a big moment for Toronto fashion!
The expansion opened this weekend so for more information visit www.yorkdale.com.

RUNWAY SONGS
by Coco Rocha
Hello again! I’m still here in BC. This picture was taken at Okanagan Lake. Isn’t it pretty?! Everything is going well - I’m dressed as a lumber jack, getting lots of sleep and fully enjoying doing a whole lot of nothing!!
So lately I’ve been listening to Major Lazer’s song “Pon De Floor” (Edited Version) on heavy repeat after I walked to it last month at Paul Smith. Even before I started modeling, good runway songs always stuck out in my mind. I remember years ago watching the Victoria’s Secret show on TV and thinking how cool it would be if I could strut down the runway to “I Like The Way You Move” by Bodyrockers or that remix of Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang” like Gisele and Adriana.
Its been four years since I started walking runways myself and I find there’s lot’s of songs I’m fond of because they’re linked in my memory to this show or that one. I remember walking for Louis Vuitton at FW 06 - it was my first time opening and closing a show and I can still recall the beats of “The Glamorous Life” by Sheila E. bouncing off the walls. On another occasion I remember laughing as I passed Behati on the runway because the song playing was “Big Girl (You are beautiful)” by Mika and I still get the whistle part of the “Twisted Nerve” remix stuck in my head, years after I walked to it at Versace.
Its funny that sometimes I’ll hear a song and just know it would be a good song to walk to. I’m not sure if its been used yet but “Let Me Think About it” by Freddie Le Grand would be great on the runway - so would “U Got The Look” By Prince. Its not necessarily the style of the song that makes a great runway theme but, for me, I prefer hard beats, on the faster side, that put me into a character I can play.
In other news, here’s me falling off a mountain!?:
FROM LONDON…
by Coco Rocha
Well, I’m sitting in my hotel room in London, overlooking what would be a beautiful view of Hyde Park if it wasn’t so very very early in the morning. I’ve been in England for a few days now, working on something special. As usual I’m sorry to say I can’t tell you what its all about just yet, but you’ll all find out soon! Everything has gone very well over here and now I’m all packed and ready to fly across 9 time zones, back to Canada for a week with friends and family! Anyway, one thing I can talk about is Zac Posen’s new ad’s I’m in. They are actually one time only ad’s specially for next months Fanzine. Have a look.
CANADA > FRANCE
You’ve probably noticed (or maybe not) that I’m not in Paris doing the shows. I’ve stayed back this season. Instead I’m out in the blistering cold of B.C’s Rocky Mountains, don’t ask why…
I hope all the designers and models had a great haute couture season while I’ve been making snow man in the drive way!
